

I have lots of CF cards and a few of them probably have images from 3 months ago that I have not yet formatted and reused. And I never format my cards until the 2nd backup is made. As I said, I make immediate backups to a 2nd hard drive anytime I have new images, and also make DVD backups. You must not have read my entire post, or you would not have asked that question. If I'm more patient I do it through download. If I want a speedy restore I pay them the $119 and they send all my stuff back. Fire, theft, malicious threat or hardware failure and I'm covered. That same program will also backup to a local drive simultaneously. Their program then running seemlessly in the background keeps me up to date without any effort on my part is peace of mind.

For me, the $119 for the HD drive from Crashplan for the initial seed is money well spent to ensure a speedy and full backup the first time for 400 GB of years and thousands of photos. Frankly, I usually have the best intentions but easily become sidetracked as time progresses. You do have a point but one also has to be vigilent to stay protected under your strategy. With 600GB though, it will certainly cost you. redundant backup to get 5- to 7-nines reliability which you likely won't have at home. I've also had drives fail in the past and most of the services have multi-site, RAID, etc. For me it was $50/yr to avoid that level of work and know data is automatically backed up. If you can dig that drive out of your safe deposit box every weekend and do the incremental backup then it may be a better option (I have no idea how much a box costs though). For $50/yr, near-real-time backup of that data in the interim (though not as real-time as I had hoped) was worth it. But I only get around to backing those up a few times a year. I have a backup drive stored in a safe, as well as DVD backups both in my home safe and at my in-laws. Hmmm.the "What happens if you have a failure in the meantime?" is exactly why I DID go with an on-line backup provide. What happens if you have a failure in the meantime? There is no way I would put up with an online backup that takes weeks or months. You can pay for the hard drive with the money you would have given them.

If they are going to sell you an external drive to backup your data and send to them, why not just get your own external drive and keep it off site such as in your safety deposit box? That's what I do and I update it periodically with new data.

With all the drawbacks mentioned, the online backup services are less appealing to me than what I had hoped. If I look inside - pure gibberish - just random data. I have my friends CrashPlan back-up drive sitting in a SATA drive docking station and connected to my PC. Without your strong password, the data is just random bits.

With CrashPlan and all of the other online services I have researched, the data is encrypted on your PC before being transmitted to the storage server. Call me old fashioned and skeptical, but I'm going the old fashinoed route for backups, rather than entrust it to an online service. If that happens, I wonder whatĭata on your computer could have been compromised and uploaded to a backup service. The other question I have is what happens when one of these backup services gets hacked, just like many banks and other institutions have. My opinion: If all your backups are under one roof, you're not really backed up. I currently have about 700 GB of data stored and also backed up, so an online service is not practical to me based on what I've read in this thread.

Further, I never format my memory cards until after the second bacukp has been made, just in case. On a day to day basis whenever I have new data, I make a backup copy to a second 1.5TB internal hard drive and also to either DVD or Blu-Ray disk as I accumulate enough data to fill another disk. Plus, making a trip to the safety deposit box (even weekly) sounds like a chore. If you did the swap a minimum of once a week, your last backup is a week old if say misfortune befalls you in the form of a flood, fire, or burglary. You'd need at least two drives with which to swap out - backing up to one whilst the other is secured.
